The Guanajuato Mummies

For some places in the world, their number one tourist attraction would be natural scenic places, interesting archaeological and architectural structures, distinct cuisines and unique festivities. Guanajuato, however, has a very peculiar main tourist attraction.

Guanajuato is a central state of Mexico and which its capital city and a river in that state possesses the same name. Other than the peculiarity of its name, Guanajuato earned its popularity in 1970 after the movie Santo Versus the Mummies of Guanajuato that featured the mummies that have been discovered in the mountainous area of Guanajuato City.

These mummies were said to be accidentally mummified because of the soil condition and dry climate in the area that dried up the bodies before they can even decompose. They were dug-up between 1865 and 1958 wherein locals are required to pay grave taxes for their departed loved ones.

Payment of the said tax is either a one-time fee of 170 Pesos or a yearly payment of 50 Pesos. Less unfortunate families, of course, can only avail the 50 Pesos yearly fee. If, however, they could not pay the taxes for three years, the bodies of their deceased relatives were dug up and put on display in El Museo de las Momias. With the growing curiosity of the people, especially the tourists, cemetery workers began charging small fees for viewing the said mummies.

What is more interesting to these mummies is that some of them still have clothes and their age ranges from very old to as young as an infant.

Although, this law has been changed in 1958, the original mummified bodies in the museum have been kept on display and can still be seen today.
